Q7.How can I prevent mold and mildew?
A:One of the easiest ways to damage your tent is to not dry it out as soon as possible after it gets wet. Storing a wet tent for 24 hours in warm weather is likely to start the process of mold formation. Mold can permanently damage the waterproofing coating by separating it from the fabric, but minor to severe staining is more common. Mold stains are permanent. They cannot be removed without damaging the fabric coating and are not covered by warranty. Even if your tent looks dry after use, it's best to make sure it's completely dry before storing it. Hang it outside or stack it loosely in your house for a few days, turning it inside and out to make sure it's dry. Do not machine dry your tent as the heat will melt the fabric.
Q8.What is the best way to clean my tent?
A:Cleaning your tent is not necessary unless it has an unpleasant odor or becomes heavily contaminated. If the contamination is severe, the pressure of a regular garden hose will remove most of the loose dirt. For more rigorous cleaning, pitch your tent and hand wash it with warm water, a sponge and mild detergent-free soap. Do not use detergents, washers, bleach, pre-soaked solutions or stain removers. Just wash with water. Dry your tent by air-drying it on the ground or with a rope. Never dry clean, machine wash or machine dry your tent. Any of these methods will remove all the waterproof coating from your tent.
Q9.How should I store my tent?
A:Do not pack or store your tent if it is wet, damp or dirty. Although we use the best polyurethane waterproofing materials, prolonged exposure to moisture can cause hydrolysis, which in turn causes the waterproofing layer to break down, become soft and sticky, and no longer waterproof. Storing a wet tent in warm weather for as little as 24 hours can also start to form mold on the fabric. Mold can cause your tent to become discolored and smelly, and can also cause premature damage to the waterproofing. Mildew and moisture damage are not covered by the limited warranty.
For long-term storage, keep your tent in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight. Store it outside of its storage bag, just as you would a sleeping bag, in a breathable oversized cotton or mesh duffel bag for protection. Cheap old pillowcases are ideal.
Q10.What causes condensation and what can I do to reduce it in my tent?
A:Condensation is moisture that builds up inside the tent due to the difference between internal and external temperatures. There are three main sources:
Weather conditions: High humidity, low temperatures and rainy conditions produce the most condensation.
People: We produce about 1 - 2 pints of moisture per night through breathing and evaporation from our skin.
Humid conditions: wet ground or wet equipment stored inside a tent. While no tent design can eliminate condensation, the key to reducing condensation is ventilation. Cool, dry air must flow into your tent, while warm, moist air must escape. We have designed several ways to do this.
First, the tent body and ceiling are made of breathable mesh fabric. This allows moisture to escape from the inside of the tent. However, it must also be able to escape the waterproof flies, and each MSR rain fly has a spire vent that provides protection from the elements while still allowing the necessary, free-flowing fresh air to pass through your tent. You can also leave the door open in good weather or use the double slider on the door to ventilate from the top, where warm and moist air tends to accumulate. If possible, make sure to open at least two vents to allow the breeze to provide cross ventilation for maximum circulation. Getting rid of your rain flies will also increase ventilation in hot or humid conditions.
